Depression is affecting more and more people every year. There is no specific cause of depression. It builds up through stress and trauma leading to chemical imbalance in the brain. If left untreated, depression can become difficult to treat as time lapses.
Here are some natural remedies for treating depression. Remember it’s not a substitute for professional help. If you are under any medication, use the natural remedies under the guidance of your medical practitioner.
Omega 3 fatty acids – Studies show Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil is very effective in treating depression. Countries like Japan and Taiwan where consumption of food with Omega 3 is high tend to have lower rate of depression.
Vitamin B – Folic acid (folate) is a type of B vitamin which includes B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B12 and choline. Research shows individuals with major depression and other mood disorders are often deficit of folate, Vitamin B6 and B12.
Vitamin B is found in dark leafy vegetables, avocado, fruits, fortified grains, sunflower seeds and cashew nuts. B vitamins help our bodies make brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that help regulate our moods and transmit messages through our brain.
Magnesium – Magnesium is required by the brain to produce serotonin as stress depletes it. Good source of magnesium are sesame seeds, banana, legumes, whole grains and leafy vegetables.
Vitamin D – Expose yourself to sunlight. Recent studies show depression is linked with vitamin D deficiency.

- Exercise – Regular exercise improves self-esteem. During exercise body releases chemical called endorphins. Endorphins trigger positive feeling and reduce the perception of pain.
- Yoga – Helps reduce symptoms of depression. Studies show people with depression practicing yoga have reduces stress, anxiety and depression. They are more energetic, confident and sleep well too.
- Meditation – Neuroscientists believe meditation helps brain shift activity from stress prone right cortex to more calmer left cortex of the brain. It helps change the brain structure especially where our emotions regulate. Meditate 10-15 minutes a day to help relieve symptoms of depression.
