“I offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord Nrsimhadeva, the source of all power. O my Lord who possesses nails and teeth just like thunderbolts, kindly vanquish our demon-like desires for fruitive activity in this material world. Please appear in our hearts and drive away our ignorance so that by Your mercy we may become fearless in the struggle for existence in this material world.” [Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 5 Chapter 18 verse 8]

Appearance Day of Lord Nrsimhadeva
(Fasting till dusk)
20th May 2016, Friday

Hare Krishna dear Devotees and Friends,

Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada.

On Friday, 20th May 2016 is the most auspicious day Narsimha Caturdasi, the Divine Appearance Day of Lord Nrsimhadeva. The fasting is till dusk.

Lord Nrsimhadeva is the fourth incarnation of Lord Sri Krishna. Lord Nrsimhadeva appeared to save Prahlada Maharaja, who was five years old boy and was being tortured by his atheistic father. He appeared from the pillar of the palace as a half-man, half-lion. After Lord Krishna’s incarnation as a boar, Varahadeva, killed the demon Hiranyaksha, the demon’s younger brother, Hiranyakashipu, was determined to take revenge and conquer the universe. He performed severe austerities to get the attention of Brahma, and asked to be granted immortality. Brahma, the engineer of the universe, was himself a mortal being and so could not grant him immortality. But he did give Hiranyakashipu the boons that he could not be killed by any man or animal, by anything living or dead, during the day or night, inside or outside, on the land or in the sea or sky.

Although seemingly invincible, when Hiranyakashipu tormented, a pure devotee of the Lord, his youngest son Prahlada, the Lord burst out of a palace column as Nrsimhadeva. By killing Hiranyakashipu in the form of a half-man and half-lion, with his fingernails, at dusk, in the threshold of the palace and on his lap, Lord Nrsimhadeva simultaneously respected the boons given by Brahma and saved His dear devotee Prahlada Maharaja.
